Our group is based in the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute's Gamboa Laboratory. We conduct research in several indoor and outdoor flight cages, and in the surrounding rainforest, in Soberanía National Park, Panama.
A note on lab safety procedures: All researchers must arrive in Panama fully vaccinated with the pre-exposure rabies vaccine (3 part series). All new bat researchers receive thorough training before they begin work. In response to covid-19, we have paused all capture or handling of bats until further notice, to protect wildlife from the possibility of becoming infected with the virus from humans. When research can resume again, it is with the following protocols: No capture or handling of bats without medical grade gloves. Face masks and protective eye goggles are required when within 2m of a bat roost.
